Dynamic Routing and Jockeying Controls in a Two-station Queueing System

چکیده

This paper studies optimal routing and jockeying policies in a two-station parallel queueing system. It is assumed that jobs arrive to the system in a Poisson stream with rate λ and are routed to one of two parallel stations. Each station has a single server and a buffer of infinite capacity. The service times are exponential with server-dependent rates, μ1 and μ2. Jockeying between stations is permitted. The jockeying cost is cij when a job in station i jockeys to station j, i 6= j. There is no cost when a new job joins either station. The holding cost in station j is hj , h1 ≤ h2, per job per unit time. We characterize the structure of the dynamic routing and jockeying policies that minimize the expected total (holding plus jockeying) cost, for both discounted and long-run average cost criteria. We show that the optimal routing and jockeying controls are described by three monotonically nondecreasing functions. We study the properties of these control functions, their relationships, and their asymptotic behavior. We show that some well-known queueing control models, such as optimal routing to symmetric and asymmetric queues, preemptive or nonpreemptive scheduling on homogeneous or heterogeneous servers, are special cases of our system.

Strategic Dynamic Jockeying Between Two Parallel Queues

Consider a two-station, heterogeneous parallel queueing system in which each station operates as an independent M/M/1 queue with its own infinite-capacity buffer. The input to the system is a Poisson process that splits among the two stations according to a Bernoulli splitting mechanism. However, upon arrival, a strategic customer initially joins one of the queues selectively and decides at sub...

The Stability of Two-Station Multitype Fluid Networks

This paper studies the uid models of two-station multiclass queueing networks with deterministic routing. A uid model is globally stable if the uid network eventually empties under each nonidling dispatch policy. We explicitly characterize the global stability region in terms of the arrival and service rates. We show that the global stability region is de+ned by the nominal workload conditions ...

Dynamic routing in open queueing networks: Brownian models, cut constraints and resource pooling

We present an introductory review of recent work on the control of open queueing networks. We assume that customers of different types arrive at a network and pass through the system via one of several possible routes; the set of routes available to a customer depends on its type. A route through the network is an ordered set of service stations: a customer queues for service at each station on...

In this paper, multi-class dynamic PERT network is considered as a queueing network, where the projects are similar and new projects are generated according to a Poisson process. Each activity is performed independently in its corresponding service station with exponential distribution by one server from several servers settled in service station based on FCFS (Fist Come, First Served) discipli...

A heuristic method for consumable resource allocation in multi-class dynamic PERT networks

This investigation presents a heuristic method for consumable resource allocation problem in multi-class dynamic Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) networks, where new projects from different classes (types) arrive to system according to independent Poisson processes with different arrival rates. Each activity of any project is operated at a devoted service station located in a n...
